Is GMail Morphing Into Google “Wavebook”?

Tgmail logo Is GMail Morphing Into Google Wavebook?he old jungle drums have been booming out about a new announcement tomorrow from Google and I wonder if it has anything to do with an increased  “socialisation” of Gmail. From what I can understand Gmail will start to allow greater use of linking, sharing media and keeping track of your Gmail contacts.Apparently the move “will allow Gmail users to view a stream of status updates from people they choose to connect with”. It will also make it easier for users of Google’s web-based email service to share links, content and media with friends from video-sharing sites such as YouTube, and photo-sharing service Picasa, both of which are owned by Google.

It is not clear whether or not this will reach out to services such as Twitter or Facebook, but the fact Google will be holding a press conferences indicates something fairly major will be announced. Normally for minor or medium level upgrades to any of its services Google allows the rumour mill to build up a head of steam and then allow the product into the wild once a head of steam has been built up.

The rumours follow hot on the tail of announcements last week that Yahoo and Facebook will be developing more comprehensive communications and email modules to their services. In many respects Google is very like Apple in its “We’ll do it our way”  approach and whether or not tomorrow’s press conference will really come out with anything earth shattering remains to be seen.

But observers of Gmail and Wave have long been wondering whether or not the two will merge or that Gmail will morph into Wave. The idea of having the two modules independent of each other does not make a great deal of sense and the fluid interaction of the two functions will strengthen Google’s hand.

  • I think Google is doing great in their strategy. Nearly everything they touch, besides Google Wave, turns to gold. As long as they keep things simple and clear, I'll be happy. They could definitely do a bit better than Facebooks interface.
  • I agree that Wave seems at first glance to be gold plated and rather shabbily done at that but I can see the potential and just hope it comes off shortly because I can see projects in the offing where it is going to be invaluable and it needs to move beyond simple threaded messages and very basic file sharing.
  • This is quite interesting, Kevin.
I'm big on Gmail with numerous accts for various purposes so I hope they don't tinker around too much. This will be interesting to see what they roll out. So long as they leave the core functionality intact, we can always cherry-pick any other features we find useful.
  • Well, we should be finding out soon. As ever, the US will get Google Buzz first and then it will filter down to the rest of us pond life :-)
  • I use Gmail on a daily basis, but rarely from the web. I'm usually checking from Thunderbird desktop client, or my phone. I'll have to start logging on to look for changes!!!
  • I guess it depends on what you want from Gmail. I must confess I don't feel a burning urge to follow my contacts 24 hours a day, it gets very voyeuristic and stalker-like.
  • Interesting, but I hope Gmail doesn't change. I like things simple.
  • I guess you can always turn a blind eye to whatever you don't want to use.
  • I guess so, but I don't think that Google ever really gets it in situations like this.

They have a tendency to revolutionize things that don't need to be revolutionized.
