Facebook And Yahoo To Challenge Gmail

by Kevin Tea on February 5, 2010

gmail logo Facebook And Yahoo To Challenge GmailMention email and everyone will probably think of Gmail – and for good reason. Google’s email offering has dramatically changed the face of communication, not just because of the huge amount of storage, but for me because it allowed me to have an ISP free email account that gave me both POP3 and IMAP4 options.  Now it appears that Yahoo and Facebook are working on email related projects that both companies obviously hope to pull the email crown from Google.

According to GigaOm Yahoo is planning an email platform on which applications can be run. An early beta is expected to be launched in the not too distant future which will have a number of apps running in a sidebar.

Surprisingly I discovered that Yahoo has more than 200 million email subscribers which is one hell of a launch platform by anyone’s standards so this could be just the boost to bring the company back into the mjainstream where it has been seen to be lagging.

Filter through the rumours and you will find that Titan will have both POP3 and IMAP support and that your email address will feature your vanity name on Facebook.

The wags at FB are calling Titan the Gmail killer which is wishful thinking from where I am sitting. Click into Gmail’s web interface and then the Lads icon and you will see the list of add ons that Google has rolled out. OK, some of them are seriously gimmicky but knowing the company’s reputation for innovation I suspect there will be some substantial progress before either Yahoo or Facebook get their products out into the wild.

  • Oh dear. I think it's awful hard to swap from one email address to another if you're a heavy and long-term user. The value proposition and features would have to be so strong to pull a Gmail user to Yahoo or Facebook...and Facebook's platform is old, clunky and cranky. This is all a non-starter to me.
  • I can understand Yahoo "tarting up" its email service as it has 200+million user base that uses its current email service. But Facebook? I don't ID it with email. It's like the equivalent of Starbucks announcing it's selling burgers!
  • I love Gmail and I'm supremely loyal to it, especially over Yahoo and Facebook.
  • I cannot see anything that Facebook or Yahoo does to woo away Gmail users. Gmail integrates too closely with my working pattern for me to drop it.
  • So would you end up with an @facebook.com email address? Can't see that being taken up by business people.

The thing I most love about Google is the Apps service that allows me to run my own domain email through the Gmail interface.
  • You can just see it - david.cameron.pm@facebook.com ;-)
  • No another web-mail service. I still think that Google has the market and it will take something pretty snazzy to compete or even knock them off the top.

I can understand building something to enhance your own services, but to say it's a Gmail killer. Wishful thinking is what it is.
  • Robert, the fact that someone at Facebook has the daftness to call it a Gmail killer spells doom!
