Ratching through some boxes full of wires, cables, connectors and the usual detritus of computing life I found my old Pion 3a. I guess I haven’t clapped eyes on this little beauty for something like 15 years since it was put out to graze after I got my first laptop, but I can still remember how useful it was to me when I was in the early throes of experimenting with technology and new ways of working.
The keyboard was surprisingly easy to use and I can recall travelling back from London and a client meeting and tapping in the minutes of the meeting and making to do lists of actions that needed taking.
I cannot remember how I took the stuff off the Psion and on to my desktop but I do remember that clients were impressed at the speed at which documentation from the meetings were in their inbox within hours. I cannot even remember the decision to stop using it in favour of laptops and the new breed of handheld PDAs such as iPaqs and Palms, but it did spur me on to start my first attempt at blogging – a site called PDA Pro – many moons ago.
But I cannot find any leads and a quick search on eBay and the Expansys site doesn’t show any Psion to PC leads using USB so the Psion is worse than useless but I am loath to consign it to the bin. So I guess I’ll put it back in the box and every now and again pick it up and recall how by life in mobile computing got started.
