Further to my earlier posting about Google’s rumoured GDrive, there is further evidence that this is just around the corner. The highly recommended GoogleSystem blog reports that Brain Ussery noticed an interesting reference to GDrive in a file used by Google Pack. The file includes “localized information which is sent to translators”.
It seems that far from being a hardware solution it will be software based and from peering into the gloom it bears an uncany resemblence to what is being offered by the likes of LiveDrive, Dropbox and others.
Google has seen the welcome given to the amount of space available with its Gmail service and sees an opening for unlimited storage and no doubt other developers will be thinking “oh shit” as the Google empire snaps up everyone’s data.
On the other hand this might be the nudge that some people will need to doubt the philanthropic offerings from the Big G and support the minions that are emerging from the cosmic soup that is cyberspace.
